See Every Pixel
At Its Best.
The right viewing distance helps your SMD screen deliver sharper visuals, better readability and the right balance between display quality and investment.
Pixel Pitch &
Viewing Distance.
Pixel pitch describes the distance between neighboring LED pixels. A smaller pixel pitch generally allows viewers to sit closer to the display while maintaining a sharper, more continuous image.
If the audience is much farther away, choosing an extremely fine pitch may provide little visible benefit while increasing project cost. On the other hand, a pitch that is too large for a close-viewing application can make individual pixels more noticeable.
1mm Pitch ≈ 8 Feet
A commonly used planning rule is to allow roughly 8 feet of viewing distance for every 1mm of pixel pitch. Use this as a starting point, not a universal engineering formula.
Approximate comfortable viewing distance
Pixel Pitch vs
Viewing Distance.
Use this table to understand how different pixel pitches generally relate to audience distance.
| Pixel Pitch | Approx. Distance | Typical Position | Example Applications |
|---|---|---|---|
| P1.5 | ≈ 12 FT | Close Viewing | Boardrooms, premium corporate spaces |
| P2 | ≈ 16 FT | Close / Medium | Corporate, retail, presentations |
| P2.5 | ≈ 20 FT | Medium Viewing | Retail, conference rooms, events |
| P3 | ≈ 24 FT | Medium Viewing | Corporate, events, semi-outdoor |
| P4 | ≈ 32 FT | Medium / Long | Retail, halls, advertising |
| P5 | ≈ 40 FT | Long Viewing | Outdoor advertising, large venues |
| P8 | ≈ 64 FT | Long Distance | Large outdoor displays, stadiums |
| P10+ | ≈ 80 FT+ | Very Long Distance | Billboards and large-format displays |

How Far Will Your Audience Be?
The closest regular viewing position is especially important. If people can walk close to the display, the selected pitch should account for that.
Measure from the actual screen surface to the typical viewer position. For public spaces, also consider the closest point where visitors can stand.
Distance Changes
By Environment.
Different spaces create different audience behaviors. Consider where people will stand, sit or move before selecting the final display specification.
Offices & Boardrooms
Close audience positions generally benefit from finer pixel pitches for presentations, dashboards and detailed content.
Shopping Malls
Consider both walking distance and stopping distance. A display may need to look good from several viewing positions.
Events & Exhibitions
Audience distance can change throughout the venue, so screen size, content and pitch should be planned together.
Outdoor Advertising
Outdoor displays are often viewed from longer distances, allowing larger pixel pitches to be considered.
Stadiums & Sports
Large venues usually require displays designed for long-distance visibility and broad audience coverage.
Digital Signage
Check the closest possible viewer position as well as the normal flow of people through the space.
Four Things To
Check Before Ordering.
Closest Viewer
Don't plan only around the average distance. Check how close someone can actually get to the display.
Content Detail
Small text, graphics and detailed visuals may require a finer pitch than simple large-format video content.
Screen Size
Physical screen size and pixel pitch work together to determine the display's resulting pixel resolution.
Environment
Indoor and outdoor conditions, ambient light and viewing angles should also be considered before final specification.

Viewing Distance
Questions Answered.
Viewing distance is the distance between the LED display surface and the viewer. For LED screens, it is an important factor when selecting pixel pitch.
Not necessarily. A smaller pitch can provide better close-range detail, but if the audience is far away, the visual difference may not justify the additional investment.
Using the common 1mm ≈ 8 feet planning guideline, approximately P2.5 is a reasonable starting point for around 20 feet. Final selection should also consider content, screen size and environment.
The closest realistic viewer position should be included in the planning. If viewers can regularly approach the screen, a finer pitch may be more appropriate.
Yes. Share your application, screen dimensions, closest viewing distance, typical viewing distance and content type. LUMAX can then help determine the appropriate specification direction for your project.
Planning note: Viewing-distance figures on this page are general planning guidelines. Actual LED screen selection can vary based on pixel pitch, screen dimensions, content, brightness, environment, viewing angle and installation conditions. A site assessment is recommended before final specification.
