Plan Your SMD Screen Before You Build It.
Understand how screen size, viewing distance, pixel pitch, resolution, cabinet layout, brightness and power requirements come together to create a practical LED display specification.
From Space to Specification
Use the LUMAX SMD Screen Configurator to turn your project requirements into a starting technical configuration before requesting a final quotation.
What Is SMD Screen Technical Planning?
Planning an SMD LED screen is more than choosing a screen size or asking for a P3, P4 or P5 price. A practical specification starts with the installation space, closest regular viewing distance, environment, content and intended application.
These inputs help determine a starting pixel pitch, physical display dimensions, native resolution, pixel load, cabinet arrangement, brightness and power requirements. The LUMAX configurator brings these decisions together so you can review the display before moving to a project-specific quotation.

The LUMAX configurator uses project and technical inputs to create a starting configuration. Each one answers a different part of the engineering question.
Project Application
Corporate, retail, advertising, events, sports and digital signage can have different display requirements.
Installation Environment
Indoor, outdoor and semi-outdoor locations affect brightness, protection and the appropriate display specification.
Screen Dimensions
Define the available width and height. Screen area is calculated from width × height.
Viewing Distance
Identify the closest regular viewer. This is one of the most important inputs for pixel-pitch planning.
Pixel Pitch
Choose or allow a starting recommendation based on viewing distance, content, environment and project goals.
Cabinet Format
Cabinet dimensions influence the physical build, module arrangement and service planning.
Content & Brightness
Video, mixed content and text/advertising can create different image and visibility requirements.
Start With the Space You Actually Have
An SMD display is normally specified by its physical width and height. For example, a 20 ft × 10 ft display has an area of 200 square feet.
However, the physical area is only the starting point. LED screens are modular, so the final build should be checked against the selected module and cabinet configuration. Available wall or structure space should be measured before final dimensions are approved. citeturn0search6
Pixel Pitch and Viewing Distance
Pixel pitch is the distance between adjacent LED pixels, measured in millimetres. A smaller pitch generally places more pixels into the same physical area and is better suited to closer viewing. citeturn0search1
The closest regular viewer should be one of the first measurements you take. Choosing the smallest available pitch without considering viewing distance can increase system cost without providing a meaningful benefit to viewers who are already far away. citeturn0search1
| Pitch | General Planning Range | Common Consideration |
|---|---|---|
| P1.2–P1.8 | Very close | Premium / close-viewing indoor |
| P2–P2.5 | Close / medium | Corporate, retail, lobbies |
| P3–P4 | Medium | Halls, events, larger spaces |
| P5–P6 | Medium / long | Outdoor advertising |
| P8–P10+ | Long | Billboards, façades and large-format displays |
Planning rule: These are practical starting categories, not fixed engineering rules. Final pitch selection should consider viewing distance, content, environment, screen size and project requirements.
Screen Size Does Not Tell You the Resolution
Physical dimensions and pixel resolution are related, but they are not the same thing. Pixel pitch determines how many LED pixels can fit into a given physical area.
For example, the same physical screen size can have different native resolutions when configured with different pixel pitches. This is why a technical calculator should report the native pixel configuration instead of using physical dimensions alone.
The LUMAX configurator reports native resolution, total pixels, pixel density and aspect ratio as part of its technical result. citeturn0search0
Modules, Cabinets and the Actual Screen Layout
An LED screen is assembled from smaller modules and cabinets rather than manufactured as one giant panel. Cabinet format affects how the display is physically arranged and serviced.
The LUMAX technical configurator includes cabinet formats such as 500 × 500 mm, 500 × 1000 mm and 640 × 480 mm. The exact final layout should always be checked against the actual selected hardware before production. citeturn0search0turn0search2
Important: The LUMAX calculator's current module configuration is based on a 320 × 160 mm module with 64 × 32 px module resolution. Actual module specifications should be confirmed against the physical module before final production. citeturn0search2
Brightness, Power and Daily Usage
Technical planning should not stop at resolution. Brightness and power requirements depend on the environment, module specification, content and operating conditions.
Brightness
Indoor controlled lighting and outdoor daylight require different visibility considerations. Final brightness should be confirmed from the selected module specification.
Average Power
Useful for estimating normal operating consumption during typical content playback.
Peak Power
Useful for planning maximum electrical load and power-system requirements.
Monthly Energy
Daily usage and operating days can be used to estimate monthly energy consumption.
The LUMAX configurator currently presents average power, peak power and estimated monthly energy in its live technical result. citeturn0search0
What Will the Screen Display?
Content type is another technical input. A screen used for video, mixed video and text, or text-heavy advertising may need different planning priorities.
Video & Motion
Consider viewing experience, processing, refresh behaviour and the intended content source.
Mixed Content
Video, graphics, text and branding need a balanced configuration.
Text & Advertising
Viewing distance and pixel pitch become particularly important when small text must remain readable.
Live Content
Events and live feeds may require additional controller and signal-processing consideration.
Build a Technical Planning Report
A useful LED screen configuration should turn project inputs into understandable technical outputs.
The LUMAX configurator provides these types of outputs, including resolution, total pixels, cabinets, aspect ratio, pixel density, weight, power, monthly energy and indicative budget. citeturn0search0
What Should You Confirm Before Ordering?
For a final project specification, hardware datasheets and site conditions should be reviewed before production. LUMAX describes the project process as requirements review, site review, display configuration, then installation and calibration. citeturn0search9
Technical Planning Is Not the Same as Price Estimation
Technical planning tells you what to build. Cost estimation helps you understand what the project may cost.
| Technical Planning | Cost Estimation |
|---|---|
| Screen dimensions | Price per square foot |
| Viewing distance | Estimated display budget |
| Pixel pitch | Structure and installation cost |
| Native resolution | Complete project quotation |
| Cabinet configuration | Controller and supporting hardware |
| Power requirements | Electrical and site requirements |
Use the LUMAX SMD Screen Price Calculator when your main question is project budget, and use the technical configurator when you need to understand the display configuration.

SMD Screen Technical Planning FAQs
What information do I need before planning an SMD screen?
Start with the installation width and height, closest regular viewing distance, indoor or outdoor environment, intended application and content type. Photos or drawings of the installation area are also useful for technical review. citeturn0search6
Does a larger SMD screen automatically have higher resolution?
No. Physical size and pixel pitch work together to determine total pixel count. A larger display with a larger pitch can have fewer pixels than a smaller display with a finer pitch. citeturn0search6
How do I choose the right pixel pitch?
Start with the closest regular viewing distance, then consider content, environment, screen size and project goals. Smaller pitch generally supports closer viewing, but the finest pitch is not automatically the right choice. citeturn0search1
Why does cabinet size matter?
Cabinet format affects the physical build, module arrangement, final layout and service planning. The selected cabinet should be checked against the actual hardware specification before production.
Can the technical calculator provide a final engineering specification?
The calculator is a planning tool. Its outputs are indicative and should be confirmed against actual module, cabinet, controller, power, structural and site requirements before final production or installation. citeturn0search0turn0search2
